There is a very simple list of what to do in a natural disaster, and following these instructions can get you through the disaster as safely as possible.
- Listen to weather radio channels or local news radio channels for critical information on the storm
- Keep pets inside during the storm
- Run water at a trickle to prevent pipes from freezing
- Fuel-burning equipment should be vented outside and kept clear
- Keep doors to garage close if there are water supply lines inside
- Open kitchen and bathroom doors to allow warmer air to circulate. Keep all harmful cleaners and chemicals out of reach of children
- Keep thermostat set to the same temperature during the day and night to prevent pipes from freezing and bursting
- Go to designated public shelter if your home loses power or heating during extreme cold
- Avoid driving in conditions including sleet, freezing rain or drizzle, snow or dense fog. If driving is necessary, keep emergency supplies in vehicle
- Consider your physical condition, the difficulty of the task, and the severity of the weather before tackling strenuous tasks
